October Update – Halloween and Half Term Fun

Well after a particularly busy start to the new school year I can’t believe it’s nearly half term. There are lots of exciting things to report on and a good few things coming up over the next few weeks. Firstly we have submitted our funding bid to WREN, which, if we are successful, will provide us with funds to update play equipment in both Hockley and Brecon parks. We’ve got quite long wait but we’ll know by February 2014. Secondly at the weekend we had Poynton’s Oxjam Festival which I supported Poynton First Scouts and Phase One Radio with. Unfortunately we forgot to order the sunshine for the day and it was rather wet and gloomy however lots of fun was had by local Scouts and Cub groups and 4 different bands/musicians including Aziz Ibrahim from the Stone Roses played to a small but supportive and enthusiastic crowd. Thanks go to Poynton Sports Club for hosting the event and Johnnie Johnson Housing and Peaks and Plans Housing Trust for sponsoring the bouncy castle on the day.

So what’s coming up…

Friday Divert

As the nights draw in and it gets a bit chillier we know it can get a bit boring for young people who’ve not got a lot to do so in partnership with Cheshire East Leisure Development Team, Poynton Leisure Centre and Poynton’s Police Community Support Officers we’re setting up Friday Divert – a six-week programme of events on Friday evenings held at Poynton Leisure Centre. The first event is on Friday 25th October and will be a football tournament for young people aged 13-18. Have a look at the poster for more details and please spread the word.Poynton Divert 2013 PDF

Other half term activities

Over half term the PCSOs will also be delivering crime prevention days and a bike marking event. Check out the poster for more details. Further to this Cheshire Constabulary have created posters for Halloween for you to place in a window to say whether you would or would not like trick or treaters to call at your house. Posters are available for download from the UPBEAT website

Poynton library are also doing lots of fun half term activities getting creative with screen printing and shadow puppetry. Have a look at their website for more details.

Cheshire East Sports Award

It’s also that time of year for Cheshire East Sports award again. Have a look at their website for how you can nominate local clubs and individuals. There are a variety of different categories so follow the link for more info. Closing date is this Friday so get making some decisions about who you could nominate.

Lyme Park Jogging Groups

If you’re aiming to get fit this Autumn, Lyme Park have started jogging groups on Thursday mornings at 9:30am and Sundays 9:00am. All groups meet at The Timber Yard Coffee Shop and more info can be found on the Greater Sport website. For more info about where you can run in general go to the Run England website

Call out for old working laptops

I’m currently working in partnership with Trish Hill who is our Adult Health and Wellbeing Coordinator working with Sixth Formers from Poynton High to deliver IT training to older members of the community. We’re currently in need of some second-hand working laptops. If anyone has a laptop they would be happy to donate that has Microsoft Office and is able to access the internet we would very much appreciate it. We would be able to remove any data from the laptop so as long as you’ve got all the information you need off the laptop we can wipe it so it no longer holds your personal files. If you think you can help please get in touch with me.

Other Updates.

Don’t forget if you’ve got anything you’d like to add to my blog, events activities etc. then feel free to send over to me. I’m particularly looking for anything in the build up to Christmas as next month’s blog will be a Christmas special all about events and activities in the lead up to this year’s festive season.

Best wishes,
