This May Day weekend was a busy one in Poynton, for those who missed it we had a free bike marking event on Park Lane, with a great turn out marking nearly 50 bikes. Don’t worry if you weren’t able to come down, we’ve got another marking event as part of our Olympic festival Poynton 2012 Embrace the Games event – (check out the new page dedicated to the day where you can find out exactly what’s happening). Keep on reading to find out how we hope the bike scheme can develop in Poynton and how you could get involved.
With a summer packed full of exciting community events – including our own Poynton 2012 Embrace the Games family fun day on Saturday 16th June, there is also a family fun day at Deva Fields on 26th May hosted by Lostock Christian Fellowship (see the What’s On! page) and the Jubilee Arts Festival only 3 weeks away. Check out the website HERE to find out more about the festival and keep reading for more information about the projects and events that are happening in and around Poynton…
Poynton Bike Scheme, What is it?
As mentioned above last weekend we launched the scheme and it is something we’d like to develop. We will continue to offer bike marking to people at events across the summer as well as introduce bike maintenance and bike safety goodies. We’re also hoping to create a network of cyclists who might be willing to offer some voluntary time and support the scheme by giving us some ideas about how it could develop, perhaps promotion of cycle routes or development of a bikeability scheme. If you think you might be interested please contact me or come along on Saturday 16th June to Poynton 2012 Embrace the Games event and find out how you can help.
Youth Civic Awards
Do you know some young people who give up their time voluntarily? Have started their own community group? Or should be commended for work they do in the community? I’m looking for nominations for the Youth Civic awards. If you know of anyone who you think deserves a Youth Civic Award please let me know. This could be a group of young people or an individual, as long as they live in Poynton and are 25 or under, anyone can be nominated for a youth civic award. I need nominations by Friday 15th June and awards will be presented on Sunday 15th July at the Civic Centre. So if you know of any child or young person who you wish to be considered for an award this year, please could you forward their details and a brief citation in confidence to the Youth Coordinator, Erica Adkins, Poynton Civic Hall, Poynton SK12 1RB , or email to me at: email@example.com
Young People’s Market
In my April update I mentioned the idea of a young people’s market, if you are aged 11-24 and would like the opportunity to sell items you have made, or promote a community group you run, let me know. I’m also looking for local businesses that might be able to offer young people some support in developing business ideas. If you have ideas about how this project could develop please get in touch.
Poynton will be hosting a celebratory Jubilee Festival from Friday 1st to Tuesday 5th June 2012.
The event is a fantastic opportunity to bring the Poynton community together and to raise the profile of the village. The festival comprises a range of events in various venues around Poynton with performances from many local groups and societies.
There will be a series of “Big lunches” on Sunday 3rd June in venues up and down Park Lane beginning at St George’s church. These will be accompanied by performances so there will be entertainment for everyone and a community feel to the whole event.
The Arts and Crafts fair will be based in central Poynton on Saturday 2nd June. There will be a range of local produce from watercolours, acrylics, jewellery, cakes, cards and much more. Look out for updates on Facebook and Twitter.
The Schools of Poynton will be taking part in a Creative Writing and Arts competition to showcase the pupil’s hard work and creativity. The works will be displayed in the Civic Hall for the duration of the event and in Poynton High School prior to this.
