Now the clocks have gone forward and the evenings are lighter there seems to be a spring in people’s step and summer is just around the corner. Plans for summer activities are well under way as well as lots of activities happening in the Easter holidays.
Poynton Family Sports Festival
Planning has started for this year’s Family Sports Festival with the event to take place at Poynton Leisure Centre on Saturday 28th June. Last year’s event was a roaring success, attended by hundreds of members of the public as well as community partners including: Cheshire East Leisure Development team, Poynton Leisure Centre, Poynton Neighbourhood Police Unit, Poynton Town Council and Poynton High School as well as many volunteers from local Poynton sports clubs and community groups.
At last year’s event we welcomed over 600 people and more than 400 signed up for a challenge card. The challenge was to take part in 5 sporting activities, including badminton, football, swimming, tennis, lacrosse, cricket, climbing and cycling, to name but a few. There were hundreds who successfully completed the challenge and received a medal, awarded to them by the Mayor of Poynton, Gabor Bartos.
Like last year, this year’s event will be an opportunity for people to try out new sports, take on new challenges and be awarded for taking part. We’re hoping that even more community groups and sports clubs can be involved this year in both planning and on the day itself. If you have already supported the event or if this is the first time you’ve heard about it and you’d like to be involved, please contact me to find out how you can be part of Poynton Family Sports Festival 2014.
Help at the 2014 Summerfest
The launch meeting was held recently for the 2014 event, which will take place from 11.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday 13th July. It promises to be every bit as good as last year’s, with much interest already being shown by local stallholders, live bands and other interested parties. The small group of volunteers who organise this community event would be really grateful for a team of volunteers to help on the day itself – free Summerfest T-shirts are on offer! If you are interested please contact Pat Clay on T. 01625 878495.
Poynton Springboard – Music For All

This will be a community event with many different types of music to suit all tastes and ages, and the local response to date has been very encouraging. The training was provided free by the Youth Federation and those that attended have been certified by the local safeguarding children’s board. If you missed out this time or would be interested in some other training please let me know.
IT Skills Training
Sixth Form students from Poynton High School have been supporting IT and iPad sessions, on Thursdays from 3.45pm to 5pm at Poynton Civic Hall. The sessions are very popular, with the opportunity to try new things on the computer, keep in touch with friends and family or even do some online shopping. With more funding received from Poynton LAP to enable us to buy more iPads. For more information or if you or someone you know might like to attend contact the Town Council on 01625 872238 and ask to speak to Trish Hill, Adult Health and Wellbeing Coordinator.
Do you know an individual or group of young people who give up their time voluntarily? Have started their own community group? Or should be commended for work they do in the community? I’m looking for nominations for the Youth Civic Awards. If you know of anyone who you think deserves a Youth Civic Award please let me know. This could be a group of young people or an individual, as long as they live in Poynton and are 25 or under, anyone can be nominated for a Youth Civic Award. I need nominations by Friday 20th June and awards will be presented on Sunday 20th July at the Civic Centre. So if you know of any child or young person who you wish to be considered for an award this year, please could you forward their details and a brief citation in confidence to the Youth Coordinator, Erica Adkins, Poynton Civic Hall, Poynton SK12 1RB , or email to me at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
A reminder about the activities page on the Town Council website, if you’d like to add your group listing follow the link.
